Guide: hosting from home
Hosting a website from home on Windows: what it really takes
Gigabit broadband and a spare PC make self-hosting look free. Sometimes it is the right call: an internal tool, a hobby site, a project you want to learn on. For anything a customer depends on, the honest answer is usually a small rented server. This guide lays out what a home setup needs so you can decide with your eyes open. ServerMaid builds a home Windows Server the same way it builds a VPS.
ServerMaid runs on Windows Server 2019, 2022 and 2025. Windows 10 and 11 are for evaluation only.
What you need before the first visitor
| The right Windows | Windows Server. Windows 10 and 11 include IIS, but the licence limits it to a handful of simultaneous connections and it is not meant to serve the public. ServerMaid treats Windows 10 and 11 as evaluation only for that reason. |
|---|---|
| A reachable address | A fixed public address from your ISP, or a dynamic DNS service that updates your domain when the address changes. If your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT, inbound connections cannot reach you at all, and no amount of configuration fixes that. |
| Port forwarding | Ports 80 and 443 forwarded from the router to the server. Never forward 3389; connect to the server from inside your network, and ServerMaid's Remote Desktop allow list still applies for anything that reaches it. |
| ISP terms | Many residential contracts forbid running servers, throttle upload, or block port 80 outright. Read the terms before you build. |
| Upload bandwidth | Visitors use your upload speed, not your download. A line with 50 Mbps up serves a small site comfortably; a busy media-heavy site will feel every video call in the house. |
| Power and uptime | A UPS for the server and the router, automatic restart after a power cut, and someone who notices when the router reboots at 3 in the morning. Windows Update will restart the machine on its own schedule unless you manage it. |
| A separate network | A machine that accepts connections from the whole internet should not sit on the same network as your laptop and the family's phones. A guest network or a VLAN is the minimum. |
| Backups elsewhere | A backup on the same machine, or in the same house, is a copy. Send backups to a network share or cloud storage outside the building. |
When home hosting is the right call
- An internal tool for a small team that only needs to work from the office network.
- A hobby or portfolio site where a few hours of downtime is a shrug.
- A learning project, because building and breaking your own server teaches more than any course.
- A development or staging server that never serves the public.
When to rent a server instead
- A client's website, or anything with a contract or an expectation behind it.
- A shop, a booking system, or anything that takes money.
- Anything that must stay up when your broadband, power or router does not.
- Anything that would make your home network a target worth attacking.
A small Windows VPS from a hosting provider costs about the same each month as the electricity for an always-on PC, comes with a fixed address, a console for when you lock yourself out, and a connection built for serving. It is the better answer far more often than the spare PC is.
Either way
ServerMaid builds it the same
Same build, same baseline
IIS, PHP, MySQL or MariaDB, folder permissions, firewall and the security baseline, built in one click on a home Windows Server exactly as on a VPS. What the build does.
Free SSL* still works
Let's Encrypt validates over port 80, which you have forwarded. Certificates are issued once the DNS check sees your domain resolving to your public address, and renewed on a schedule.
Backups off-site
Point the Backups module at a network share or a drive that lives somewhere else, and every set is verified and its dumps replayed. Proven backups.
* Free SSL certificates need the Websites and SSL module (included in Agency and Enterprise licences) on a licence within its twelve-month period. Certificates come from Let's Encrypt; new websites get one while the licence is in date, and certificates already issued keep renewing.
Questions about hosting from home
Can I use Windows 10 or 11 with ServerMaid?
For evaluation only. The build works, but client editions of Windows limit IIS to a small number of simultaneous connections and are not licensed for serving the public. Use Windows Server for a real site.
My address changes every few days. Will SSL keep working?
Yes, as long as a dynamic DNS service keeps your domain pointing at the current address. The renewal task validates over HTTP against whatever the domain resolves to at the time.
How do I know if my ISP uses carrier-grade NAT?
Compare the address your router reports on its WAN page with the address a "what is my IP" site shows. If they differ, or the router's address starts with 100.64 to 100.127, you are behind carrier-grade NAT and inbound connections cannot reach you without a paid fixed address or a tunnel.
Is a home server more likely to be attacked?
It is attacked exactly as much as any public address, which is constantly. The difference is what else is reachable if it falls. Keep it on a separate network, keep Remote Desktop off the internet, and apply the security baseline before the first visitor arrives.
What does a small VPS cost compared with a home PC?
Entry Windows VPS plans are priced in the range of a few pounds to a few tens of pounds a month, which is comparable to the electricity for an always-on desktop. The VPS comes with a fixed address, a rescue console and a connection built for serving.
