Comparison: alternatives
The best Plesk alternatives for Windows Server
Most hosting control panels, cPanel included, run on Linux only. On Windows Server the real choices are few, and they solve different problems. Here they are, with what each is good at, so you can pick the one that fits what you host rather than the one with the longest feature list.
Server setup £99 £49.50 plus Websites and SSL £79, £39.50 per server for twelve months, unlimited websites. 30-day money-back promise.
First, what do you need?
A control panel, or a well-built server?
People look for a Plesk alternative for two different reasons. Some resell hosting and need mailboxes, DNS and customer logins: that is a control panel's job. Others host their own or their clients' websites and mostly want the server set up properly and kept healthy: that is server engineering, and a panel only gives you the tools to do it yourself. Many tools expect a web server already set up; the difference is who does that part.
The alternatives
ServerMaid
What it is: an automated Windows web server engineer. It builds a fresh Windows Server into a hardened IIS, PHP and MySQL web server, proves the build with tests, then monitors, backs up and repairs it. Websites are added from one form, each with its own pool, database and free SSL.
Best for: PHP and WordPress websites, your own or your clients', on Windows Server 2019, 2022 or 2025, without becoming a Windows sysadmin. Not for: mail hosting, DNS hosting, customer self-service, ASP.NET or Linux.
Cost: £178 £89 per server for twelve months with unlimited websites (Server setup plus Websites and SSL); Agency licences for several servers.
SolidCP
What it is: a free, open-source hosting control panel for Windows, continuing the old WebsitePanel project. It manages IIS sites, SQL Server and MySQL databases, mail and DNS servers, with reseller and customer accounts.
Best for: hosting companies that want a Plesk-style multi-customer panel on Windows without licence fees and have the Windows skills to install, secure and maintain it and the servers behind it. Watch for: a larger setup (several components and services) and security that is yours to configure.
Windows Admin Center
What it is: Microsoft's free browser-based tool for managing Windows Servers: roles, updates, files, firewall, certificates, performance.
Best for: administrators managing Windows Servers in general. Not for: web hosting as such: it has no concept of a website with its database and certificate, so the web stack is still built by hand.
IIS Manager and scripts, by hand
What it is: the tools built into Windows Server, plus PowerShell.
Best for: an experienced Windows web engineer who wants full control and has the time to build, document and maintain every server. Watch for: every server ends up a little different, and the knowledge lives in one person's head. The full manual install shows how many steps are involved.
A cheaper Plesk edition, or Plesk from your provider
If you do need Plesk's features, the Web Admin edition or a licence bundled by your VPS provider can cost much less than list price. See ServerMaid vs Plesk for the editions and prices side by side.
Moving to Linux
cPanel, HestiaCP, CyberPanel and others run on Linux only. If your sites are PHP and you are happy to learn Linux, that opens up many panels; if you prefer Windows Server, or run other Windows software on the same server, the options above are the ones that apply.
Choosing
Which one fits
You resell hosting
Mailboxes, DNS, customer logins and billing: Plesk, or SolidCP if you have the Windows skills to run it yourself.
You host PHP sites
Your own or your clients' PHP and WordPress sites, set up properly and kept healthy with no sysadmin: ServerMaid.
You are the sysadmin
Full control and the time to maintain it: IIS Manager and PowerShell, with Windows Admin Center for the rest of the server.
Questions about Plesk alternatives on Windows
Is there a free alternative to Plesk for Windows?
SolidCP is free and open source, and Windows Admin Center is free from Microsoft. Both cost time instead of money: SolidCP to install, secure and maintain, and Windows Admin Center leaves the web stack to you.
Does cPanel run on Windows Server?
No. cPanel runs on Linux only, as do most other popular panels. On Windows the choices are Plesk, SolidCP, doing it by hand, or ServerMaid.
Is ServerMaid a control panel?
No. It is an automated Windows web server engineer: it builds, secures, verifies, monitors and repairs the server, and adds websites from one form. It does not host mail or DNS or give customers their own logins.
Can I use ServerMaid and a control panel together?
That is not recommended on the same server: both would try to manage IIS. Many people move to ServerMaid from Plesk precisely because they only used it for websites.
How do I move my websites off a Plesk server?
Run ServerMaid Migrate on the old Windows server, then import the package on the new one; WordPress and Laravel sites are recognised with their databases. How migration works.
Websites on Windows Server, without the panel or the sysadmin
A production-grade server built, proved and kept healthy, with unlimited websites.
